Through the examination of our collective practices, we are exploring the framework of Utopic living. Assembling found materials, we seek to build a narrative that embodies the raw beauty in Bushwick and the New York metropolitan area. This domestic space in the interior of the gallery aims to answer broad questions about what defines twenty-first century dwellings during this new era of insecurity and drastic change. Our concept of home explores ideas of constant flux in modern society through creation of a loosely formed, actively evolving, collaborative space. As a group of transplants to New York City, we are exploring ideas around the act of home making and its power in rethinking and reshaping our ever fluctuating future. As we discard the old and the broken, we lose the creativity to find beauty and value in materials with a past life.

Natty Paint Joins the Co-Op

Natty Paint was founded in May 2009 in Baltimore, MD and is currently based out of Brooklyn, NY. An amalgam of Brooklyn and Baltimore’s burgeoning visual arts and music scenes, Natty Paint combines these art forms and transforms them into a fashion statement. Bright colors, geometric forms, and the interaction between patterns and images all comprise the Natty Paint aesthetic.

The label has quickly gained a cult following in Baltimore and has continued onto Brooklyn. Natty Paint has been worn by famed musicians Animal Collective, Dan Deacon, Delorean, Crystal Castles, La Roux, The Rapture, Rye Rye, M.I.A., and Beach House during their performances as well as actresses Lucy Liu and Brie Larson.

Natty Paint is comprised of three lines: silkscreened American Apparel shirts, higher priced, fashion-forward silkscreened and reworked vintage apparel, and an in-house designed silkscreened line. All clothing is eco-friendly and sustainably designed using water-based paint, saved vintage, and sweatshop free materials.

It's great, Andy gets to stop by a lot. She lives in the building, which makes it very easy for me to get new stuff all the time!

I had a couple of questions for her, and below is what she had to say about her background and process......

"I grew up in Seattle, WA so have a deep fondness for micro-brews and espresso, (goes without saying) and of course the rain...:) I went to school for graphic design but worked for my family business painting backdrops and building props for commercial and portrait photographers and some film studios since I was twelve. I will forever be fighting the clutter of the supplies and tool kits from the wide variety of jobs I’ve had over the years, from painting and wood finishing for a museum exhibit company to custom framing, graphic design and when I moved to NY jewelry design. I worked for a local Brooklyn designer Seeka before branching out on my own and began selling at shows, markets and local stores. I’m in love with the industrial emptiness of Bushwick, it has inspired me to become more adventuresome and try and break through what I find to be conventionally beautiful.

Now, for me, the more textured, beat up and eclectic a piece is, in whatever medium, the more I like it because it has character and isn’t existing to try and impress but to blend into it’s natural environment. It’s what I imagine the function of art should be, its presence should be more important than its proposed intention or another way to think of it, creative humbleness. The next phase for my own line is to create some altruistic pieces so I can give a portion to charity, currently I’ve been donating proceeds to the Gulf Coast Relief Fund through The National Audubon Society http://www.audubon.org/ and The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana http://www.crcl.org./ I believe the artists in Bushwick are another wave of creativity spreading through Brooklyn and I think that we’re just at the beginning of seeing what will emerge from this mix of venturesome minds... Yay! Brooklyn!"

I am so so excited to welcome Brianna of "Ministry of Culture" to the handmade co-op! She is a pattern maker by day, works on her own line during the little time she has in between, and believes in using organic fabrics and recyling vintage fabrics and pieces. She is a brand new designer just getting her bearings, and this is her first store! She doesn't even have photos of her pieces. Luckily my little sister Ashley is in town. Eventhough she hates photos as much as I do, she does love dress up, so agreed to be my model for the day. Isn't she So cute!!!

On June 10th Better Than Jam and some members of the co-op participated in a fashion show!
It was a charity event held at the Skylight at 1 Hanson, a beautiful old bank space. The "Gala Celebration" was to benefit the Brooklyn Community Housing and Services, their goal being to end homelessness. We were happy to donate some pieces to help out, and to spread the word of the new shop.

Last weekend was Brooklyn's Renegade Craft Fair. The best indie market of the season! I always have so much fun at this event. Thank you everyone for showing up and getting your summer BTJ dresses.

Meet Melissa of "IQ Test"

IQ Test is the newest addition to the Co-Op.
Melissa uses fabrics discarded by cutting
factories. Massive amounts of fabric are just
thrown away, and her goal is to raise awareness
and do her part to help save these usable pieces
from the landfills.

where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Cedar Rapids Iowa.

how did you come to be in nyc?

I moved to NYC because of music, I visited the first time with a band.. then on a visit I went to a party where I heard some great music and I decided to stay… then I moved here!

when did you start making things?

I started making things as a child. I started making clothing when I was 11.

did you go to school/ were you trained?

I studied performance and video art..

when did you begin to sell what you were making?

I started selling clothing at 17.

what is your ultimate goal with this line/ your work?

To help keep fabric out of the landfills. The fabrics I am using now are salvaged from cutting factories. I hope to eventually get the factories to recycle the off cut fabrics. For now I salvage what I can. I am finding places that will buy the fabric wastes so the fabrics can deliver it there and get paid rather than to the landfills.

how do you see yourself expanding/ how do you want to grow?

I want to sell in a few places abroad too.

describe your process?

I look for fabric, I find fabric, I look at it, feel it… then I begin to sew it..

describe your work space?

My work space is homey, it has shelves and tables and two sewing machines.. I have a collection of fabric covered Chinese boxes I have collected from the street in China town.. I store tools in these.

where do you find/ get inspiration?

I just try to have fun and make things to wear!!

when you hit a wall, what do you do to get out of your funk?

I go for a bike ride, do some thing different, take a breather..

what are your thoughts on the co-op?

I love co-op’s my mother made a co-op preschool when I was 2 I have liked them through my life, I have been a member of a couple food co-ops too.

what do you see of the future of bushwick?

Think Bushwick will keep growing and growing.. I have been in this neighborhood since Feb of 1999. It has just steadily grown.. It has a lot of room for growth. I don’t think another sensational hood will take it over…

what do you plan on doing at the co-op?

I plan to sell clothing at the co-op and spread the word on some of the environmental issues I and concerned with.. The fabric waste that is going into the landfills, the huge amounts of plastics that are polluting our oceans and other big business environmental problems..

Meet Kari Love of "Ikyoto"

where were you born and raised?

I'm originally from Hoquiam, a small town on the Washington coast. Historically it was a logging town, and the name means "Hungry For Wood" in the local natives' language. True to the region's reputation, it rains a lot, and the nearby rain forest is great for seeing beautiful moss.

how did you come to be in nyc?

When it came time to pick a college, I wanted to try something very different from my roots. New York City seemed to fit the bill, and the diversity and vibrancy of the city quickly had me hooked.

when did you start making things?

I've been making things as long as I can remember. On a recent family trip, I found an embroidered towel that I made for my grandfather when I was probably about 5. My mother was a quilter and general craft enthusiast, she taught me to sew and was amazed that I went into a sewing related field since I used to shout and throw my mistakes across the room as a teenager. On that side it is at least 3rd generation since my grandma was a professional seamstress. My father loves to tinker on crazy projects (a favorite story from his childhood was about him making a Valentine that would shoot a tiny dart, and giving it to his teacher), and we also share a love of science. So I seem to have gotten the creative bug from my parents, but I'm not sure if it is nature or nurture.

did you go to school/ were you trained?

I went to school at New York University Gallatin School, and divided my time between costume design and any crazy thing I could imagine. My other academic focus was East Asian studies, but I found plenty of time for things like glassblowing, metal casting, circus arts, jewelry making, etc. I continue to dabble with classes at FIT such as shoemaking. I have learned a ton from working in a costume shop professionally, and am very proud of the work we do there. Mostly I work on Broadway musicals, but ballets, operas, ice shows and circuses each have taught me fun styles and techniques as well. I'm occasionally working in a puppet shop as well where I am improving my skills for working with wood, plastics and power tools.

when did you begin to sell what you were making?

I received a Gocco print machine as a gift, and was very excited about making t-shirts for myself and friends. Ultimately I found that it was just as easy to print 10 as to print 2, so it seemed ideal to sell the overflow. I put them up on Etsy, and took them to an anime convention, and it was so fun to see them find new homes and interact with buyers.

what is your ultimate goal with this line/ your work?

One of the things that gets me down about my day job is that average people have trouble getting access to what I do, theater seems out of reach either geographically or financially for many people. I wanted to have a body of work that I felt that I could afford if I were the customer. I'd also like to explore more ideas in the future that make people smile or laugh. The Ikyoto line is (perhaps cheesily) about having a joyful experience for myself as the creator, and for those who buy it.

describe your process?

When I have a funny idea or experience, I write it down to percolate for later. After a few months or years, a product may have emerged. The t-shirt images are from a vintage science textbook that I found in the trash of a jr. high school I was working at in Japan. The illustrations immediately jumped out and me and I filed them away for later use. I blew them up to 400 times their original size, burned screens on the Gocco machine, fiddled with how to fit a t-shirt into the device, print, dry and heat set. The puppet scarves grew out of relationship with the Puppet Kitchen (an East Village custom puppet and props company) where I can contribute to their retail plans, and in return, can use their designs. I deal with the fur in the usual way, razor blades and sewing machines, and have now become resigned to being covered with artificial hair.

describe your work space?

Until recently I did all of my printing on my cutting table at my office, but now I have a brand new studio share to settle in to. The most notable thing about my work space is the people. My co-workers always come up to chat with me about my side projects and their own (a small sampling of their stuff included an el-wire wrestler's costume, starting a wedding photography business and hand-dyed weaving). We all help and inspire each other, and I can usually get any technical question answered.

where do you find/ get inspiration?

I'm half-Japanese of descent, and lived in Japan for two years after college. There is a strong Japanese pop culture influence in things I make. Another inspiration is the intellectual stimulation from podcasts, especially scientific ones such as Radiolab, which I listen to while working with my hands. I'm a huge nerd, and my partner and friends' conversations provide me with a lot of fodder for creative use as well, such as a line of dinosaur prints I'm currently developing.

when you hit a wall, what do you do to get out of your funk?

My to-do list is way too long to ever run out of things to make, but when I'm emotionally in a funk and lacking energy to create, I tend to escape into a movie or a book. I also cook and eat lots of fruit and vegetables while singing the Shonen Knife song that recommends that exact course of action.

what are your thoughts on the co-op?

I'm so excited to be part of the Better Than Jam Co-op. I know several of the designers personally and am fans of them both as humans and of their work. Some people outside the city think that living in NYC would be incredibly lonely or alienating, but I find that it creates community as people with similar interests and values find each other. I feel that the co-op has the potential to be the center of one such community.

what do see of the future of bushwick?

Bushwick is so different since I used to live there in 2004, and since I only bet on a sure thing, I would bet on more change. So far it seems that artists and artisans will continue to be a driving force of that change.

what do you plan on doing at the co-op?

I've heard that there is interest in having a DIY underwear workshop, so that may be in our future as soon as we figure out the sewing machine situation. In terms of products, I have some dinosaur related designs in mind and some vintage windbreakers waiting to be refashioned.
